In Ontario, Midwives are registered health professionals who provide complete care to families throughout the pregnancy and labour. They also provide care to both the mother and baby six weeks following the birth. Midwives can order all routine tests and ultrasounds and are available to their clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If concerns or complications arise in the pregnancy, birth or six weeks following the birth, a midwife will consult or transfer care to an appropriate physician and remain in a supportive role, if possible. Midwives support the philosophy that people have the right to make informed choices. Midwives attend births at home and in hospitals. Referrals are not needed.
The Midland Midwives By The Bay have expanded their operations within CSC CHIGAMIK CHC, and offer birthing options at home, the Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) and Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH). Clients now have access to more local midwifery care and services including:
- A dedicated Midland team of midwives
- Expanded clinic hours
- A lending library with books and DVDs
- Ongoing workshops and educational events
